Flying from Knoxville for the first time
It's a lot easier than it looks. Here's everything that happens, in order, from buying the ticket to sitting down on the plane.
Find a flight that goes straight there
A nonstop flight takes off in Knoxville and lands where you're going, with no stops and no changing planes. It's the easiest way to fly. See every nonstop from Knoxville, or put in your dates to see what works.
Buy your ticket
Book on the airline's website or app. You'll need your name exactly as it's printed on your ID, your date of birth, an email address and a card to pay with.
Cheap fares often don't include a carry-on bag or picking your seat. You'll be offered those extras before you pay. When you're done, you'll get an email with a confirmation code, usually 6 letters and numbers. Keep it handy.
Check in the day before
Starting 24 hours before your flight, open the airline's app or website and tap "Check in." Then you get your boarding pass, the ticket you show to get on the plane. It can stay on your phone, or you can print it. Some airlines charge to print it at the airport, so it's best to check in online.
Pack your bags
You can usually bring one small personal item (a purse or small backpack that fits under the seat). A carry-on goes in the bin over your head, and a checked bag goes under the plane. Each airline has its own rules and prices for bags.
In your carry-on, liquids must be 3.4 ounces or less and fit in one clear quart-size bag. Bring a REAL ID driver's license (it has a star on it) or a passport.
Get to McGhee Tyson about 2 hours early
McGhee Tyson Airport is at 2055 Alcoa Highway, Alcoa, TN 37701, about 20 minutes from downtown Knoxville. Give yourself extra time early in the morning and around holidays. More on timing.
Park, or get dropped off upstairs
Drop-off is on the upper level, marked Departures. If you're driving yourself, the garage is closest. The economy lots are cheaper and have a free shuttle to the terminal. Compare parking.
Check your bag at the airline counter
If you're checking a bag, find your airline's counter on the upper level. They'll weigh it, tag it and send it to the plane. No checked bag? Skip this and go straight to security.
Go through security
The TSA checkpoint is also on the upper level. Show your ID and boarding pass. Put your bags, jacket and anything in your pockets in the bins. You'll walk through a scanner. What to expect at security.
Find your gate and wait to board
Your gate number is on your boarding pass and on the screens past security. Boarding usually starts 30 to 45 minutes before the departure time. When your group is called, show your boarding pass and walk on.
When you land
Follow the signs for Baggage Claim to pick up any checked bags, and for Ground Transportation for taxis, rideshare and rental cars.
Common questions
What ID do I need to fly?
Adults need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license (it has a star in the top corner) or another accepted ID like a passport. Kids under 18 don't need ID for flights inside the U.S.
Do I need a passport to fly to Florida or another state?
No. For flights inside the United States you only need a REAL ID or another accepted ID. You need a passport for international trips.
Do I have to print my boarding pass?
No. You can show it on your phone. If you'd rather have paper, print it at home or get it at the airline counter at the airport.
How early should I get to the airport?
Plan on being at McGhee Tyson about 2 hours before your flight, and a little earlier at busy times or if you're checking a bag.
What liquids can I bring in my carry-on?
Liquids, gels and creams must be 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less each, and all of them must fit in one clear quart-size bag. Bigger bottles go in a checked bag.
Can someone help me through the airport?
Yes. If you need a wheelchair or extra help, tell your airline when you book or check in. They'll have someone meet you at the counter and take you to the gate.
Airport details come from McGhee Tyson Airport's traveler information. ID and liquid rules come from the TSA. Rules can change, so check with your airline before you fly.
